Chagas disease is a protozoal infectious disease caused by Trypanosoma infection. There are two types of trypanosomiasis: African trypanosomiasis and American trypanosomiasis. The former is distributed in western and central Africa, with humans as the main source of infection and tsetse flies of the Glossina palpalis group as the transmission vector; the latter is distributed in eastern Africa, with both animals and humans as sources of infection and Glossina morsitans as the transmission vector. African trypanosomiasis predominantly involves neurological lesions.
