Acute gastric mucosal lesions occurring under severe stress responses such as multiple trauma, severe systemic infection, extensive burns, shock, and multiple organ failure are one of the common causes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The lesions of stress ulcers have four major characteristics: 1. They are acute lesions that develop under stressful conditions; 2. They are multiple; 3. The lesions are scattered in the gastric body and gastric fundus, the acid-secreting areas containing parietal cells, and are rarely seen in the gastric antrum, which is only occasionally involved when the condition progresses or deteriorates; 4. They are not accompanied by high gastric acid secretion.
