Acute gastric dilatation refers to extreme dilation of the stomach and duodenum due to the inability to expel a large amount of contents within a short period, leading to repeated vomiting, and subsequently water and electrolyte disturbances, and even shock or death. This condition mostly occurs after surgery, but can also be caused by overeating. It can occur in both children and adults, with a male predominance.
