Deltamethrin poisoning

Internal Medicine / Traditional Chinese Medicine

Deltamethrin is the most toxic variety among pyrethroid insecticides. It has the characteristics of broad spectrum and low residue, and is effective against insects that have developed resistance to organophosphates and other insecticides. Poisoning generally occurs through skin absorption or oral ingestion. The mechanism of poisoning is not yet fully understood. It is believed that deltamethrin exerts an excitatory effect on the extrapyramidal system of the central nervous system, cerebellum, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves because it selectively slows the closure of the "m" gate of sodium ion channels in neuronal cell membranes, keeping the sodium channels open, thereby prolonging the depolarization phase of the action potential, causing repetitive firing of peripheral nerves, and consequently enhancing the excitability of spinal interneurons and peripheral nerves, leading to a series of corresponding clinical manifestations.
