Strong alkali poisoning

Internal Medicine / 皮肤性病科

Strong alkalis include sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, sodium oxide, potassium oxide, as well as weaker corrosives such as sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, calcium oxide, and ammonium hydroxide. Bleaching powder contains 3%–6% potassium hypochlorite. Strong alkali compounds are widely used and are also found in everyday detergents, drain cleaners, polishes, paint removers, and hair straighteners. Poisoning from strong alkalis most often results from direct splashing onto the skin, mucous membranes, or eyes, causing irritation, severe corrosion, and burns; ingestion can also cause poisoning.
