Alveolar echinococcosis is a disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis, the alveolar hydatid cyst (alveococcus), parasitizing the human body. It is also known as alveolar hydatid disease (AE) or multilocular hydatid disease. In terms of biology, epidemiology, pathology, and clinical manifestations, the alveolar type and cystic type of echinococcosis are significantly different.
