Tropical sprue is prevalent among residents of tropical regions and is most common in South America, Africa, India, and other Southeast Asian countries. It can occur at any age. In recent years, this disease occurring in the tropics has been classified under the type of "infectious malabsorption," and it has been divided into two types: parasitic (i.e., giardiasis) and non-parasitic (tropical sprue).
