Paralytic ileus, also known as adynamic ileus, is caused by various factors affecting the balance of the intestinal autonomic nervous system; or affecting local intestinal nerve conduction; or affecting intestinal smooth muscle contraction, resulting in intestinal dilatation and disappearance of peristalsis. Patients have significant abdominal distension, without paroxysmal colicky pain, etc. Bowel sounds are diminished or absent, and intestinal perforation is rare. It is often accompanied by vomiting of gastric contents, with no fecal odor in the vomitus. The patient cannot sit up and feels dyspnea.
