Hilar cholangiocarcinoma, also known as Klatskin tumor, is a common malignant tumor of the biliary system. Due to its special location, infiltrative growth pattern, and close relationship with hilar vessels, hilar cholangiocarcinoma poses great difficulty for surgical resection. For a long time, hilar cholangiocarcinoma was considered a cancer that could not be radically resected surgically. Over the past 20 years, with advances in imaging and surgical techniques, significant progress has been made in the diagnosis and treatment of hilar cholangiocarcinoma, with gradually increasing resection rates and markedly improved survival outcomes. However, whether to perform extended radical resection, vascular resection and reconstruction, and the efficacy of radiotherapy and chemotherapy remain formidable challenges for hepatobiliary surgeons and oncologists.
