Non-01 Vibrio cholerae enteritis is an intestinal infectious disease caused by non-01 group Vibrio cholerae, with clinical manifestations of gastroenteritis type and dysentery type. In recent years, with the decline in the incidence of cholera, the epidemic scope, intensity, and pathogenicity of non-01 group Vibrio cholerae infection have shown an upward trend, gradually attracting attention. In recent years, it has been reported that during a cholera epidemic in South Asia, the epidemic strain was not agglutinated by diagnostic sera for Vibrio cholerae 01 group or non-01 group Vibrio cholerae, and this epidemic strain is a new serotype of Vibrio cholerae not previously recorded, hence it was designated as Vibrio cholerae 0139. Furthermore, since this strain was first isolated from the coastal area of the Bay of Bengal, the synonym "Bengal" type has been suggested.
