Babesiosis (babesiosis, piroplasmosis) is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by intraerythrocytic blood protozoa of the genus Babesia, transmitted through tick vectors. Different species of protozoa can cause disease in corresponding vertebrates, hence there are various babesioses such as bovine, equine, canine, ovine, and porcine babesiosis. Human babesiosis, in acute onset, closely resembles malaria, characterized clinically by intermittent fever, splenomegaly, jaundice, and hemolysis.
