Cecal volvulus refers to the torsion of the ileocecal loop. The normal cecum is attached to the posterior abdominal wall and does not undergo volvulus. Cecal volvulus occurs only secondary to a mobile cecum. As the cecum twists, the adjacent ileum and ascending colon also twist simultaneously. It is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction, accounting for approximately 1% of all intestinal obstructions. Cecal volvulus is a closed-loop intestinal obstruction that can lead to early impairment of intestinal blood circulation, making it highly dangerous. Without surgery, acute volvulus has a mortality rate of nearly 100%.
