Gastric retention, or delayed gastric emptying, refers to the accumulation of gastric contents without timely emptying. Vomiting of food ingested 4-6 hours earlier, or a residual gastric volume greater than 200 ml after fasting for more than 8 hours, indicates the presence of gastric retention. This disease is divided into organic and functional types. The former includes pyloric obstruction caused by peptic ulcer, and pyloric obstruction caused by compression or blockage from primary or secondary tumors of the gastric antrum and adjacent organs.
