Pulmonary hypertension

Internal Medicine

Pulmonary hypertension is an extremely serious disease. 75% of patients are concentrated in the 20-40 age group, and 15% of patients are under 20 years old. Symptoms of pulmonary hypertension include shortness of breath, easy fatigue, syncope, chest pain, and edema of the legs and ankles. In addition, an accentuated P2 can be heard on cardiac auscultation. If not treated in time, pulmonary hypertension will gradually worsen and may even shorten the patient's lifespan. Most symptoms related to pulmonary hypertension originate from right heart failure. Before the 1990s, the medical community indeed lacked treatment methods for this disease. However, since then, new drugs have been developed successively, and the average 5-year or 10-year survival rate of patients can be increased severalfold. In addition to drugs, new therapies such as gene therapy, living-donor lung transplantation, and atrial septostomy have emerged in recent years, and there are now multiple treatment options.
