Anal cancer mostly occurs on the anal canal or anal margin skin, and is mostly squamous cell carcinoma, with a small number being basal cell carcinoma. Those growing at the dentate line are anal canal cancers; those growing below the dentate line are perianal cancers or anal margin cancers. Anal canal cancer is more common in females, while perianal cancer is more common in males. Squamous cell carcinoma mostly occurs in the anal canal and perianal area, arising from the squamous epithelium of the anal canal and perianal region, often caused by long-term chronic stimulation and damage from anal fistulas, hemorrhoids, surgical scars, condylomas, hidradenitis suppurativa, and pilonidal cysts.
