Esophageal polyp

Internal Medicine / Surgery

Esophageal polyps rank second among benign esophageal tumors, with an incidence second only to esophageal leiomyoma. Since the tumor body of esophageal polyps is composed of varying amounts of fibrovascular tissue, adipose tissue, and stroma derived from esophageal mucosa and submucosal tissue, with the surface covered by normal esophageal mucosa, they are prone to secondary ulceration and bleeding. The fibrous component of the tumor may be loose fibrous tissue or dense collagenous fibrous tissue, hence names such as fibroangioma, fibrolipoma, myxofibroma, or pedunculated lipoma are also used.
