Icteric hepatitis is a condition in which hepatitis viruses cause destruction of hepatocytes, destruction and remodeling of liver tissue, and obstruction of bile ductules, leading to elevated levels of both conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin in the blood, resulting in yellowing of the skin, mucous membranes, and the sclera of the eyes. Usually, when the blood bilirubin concentration exceeds 2-3 mg/dL, these parts will show visibly discernible discoloration.
