Viral hepatitis type E is a self-limiting infectious disease with epidemic characteristics similar to hepatitis A, transmitted through the fecal-oral route. Waterborne epidemics are the most common, with a few being foodborne outbreaks or transmission through daily contact. It has an obvious seasonality, often occurring after rainy seasons or floods; the affected population is mainly young and middle-aged adults, with pregnant women being highly susceptible, experiencing severe illness and high mortality; no family clustering phenomenon is observed.
