Salmonella infection

Internal Medicine

Salmonella has a wide range of hosts in nature. A few Salmonella species are selective for their hosts, but the vast majority are adapted to both humans and animals, and can reside in the gastrointestinal tracts of mammals, reptiles, birds, insects, and humans. The infection rate among a wide variety of domestic and wild animals ranges from 1% to over 20%. Salmonella belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae and can cause various syndromes including gastroenteritis, typhoid fever, septicemia, and extraintestinal focal infections, collectively referred to as Salmonella infection (i.e., salmonellosis). This disease can occur at any age, but susceptibility is increased in young children (especially around 1 year of age), the elderly, those with chronic wasting diseases, and those who have recently taken antibacterial drugs. The pathogenic bacteria most commonly include Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella choleraesuis, Salmonella anatum, and Salmonella newport. The medication is actually more suitable for application to clothing.
