The most common cause of esophageal cicatricial stricture is chemical burns of the esophagus caused by ingestion of strong alkalis or strong acids, leading to scar tissue contraction and narrowing of the esophageal lumen after healing. In addition, gastroesophageal reflux esophagitis can result in ulcer formation and scar contraction. Esophageal trauma and surgery may also produce cicatricial stricture.
