cardiac cancer

Internal Medicine / Oncology

In high-incidence areas of esophageal cancer in China, the incidence of cardia cancer is also very high. According to statistics from these regions and tumor research and treatment institutions, the ratio of esophageal cancer to cardia cancer is approximately 2:1. Due to inconsistent understanding of the scope of the cardia, there are different views on the definition of cardia cancer, resulting in considerable discrepancies in statistical data. The correct definition of cardia cancer is adenocarcinoma occurring at the gastric cardia, that is, within approximately 2 cm below the esophagogastric junction. It is a special type of gastric cancer and should be distinguished from lower esophageal cancer. However, it also differs from gastric cancer at other sites, having its own anatomical and histological characteristics, clinical manifestations, unique diagnostic and treatment methods, and poorer surgical outcomes.
