Colorectal polyps is a general term for all protuberant growths protruding into the intestinal lumen, including neoplastic and non-neoplastic types. The former are closely related to carcinogenesis and are precancerous lesions, while the latter are less associated with cancer. Since these two types of polyps are not easily distinguished clinically, they are often collectively diagnosed initially as polyps, with further classification after pathological examination confirms the diagnosis. Therefore, the clinical term colorectal polyp does not indicate the pathological nature of the polyp; usually, polyps referred to by clinicians are mostly non-neoplastic polyps, while neoplastic polyps are collectively termed adenomas.
