gastric diaphragm

Internal Medicine / Surgery

Gastric diaphragm is clinically rare. The mucosal diaphragm occurs in the gastric antrum or pylorus and encircles the gastric wall, which can narrow the terminal antrum but does not occlude the gastric lumen. The membrane is composed of squamous epithelium or columnar epithelium. It is caused by congenital developmental abnormalities, specifically abnormalities in the cavitation process of the embryonic digestive tract in early development. The diaphragm is mostly located 1.5-3 cm proximal to the pylorus, or near the pylorus. Occasionally two diaphragms occur simultaneously, with the other located several centimeters from the pylorus, far into the duodenum, separating the stomach and duodenum.
