Ascites due to liver disease

Internal Medicine / Surgery / Traditional Chinese Medicine

Cirrhotic ascites is commonly known as hepatic ascites. Normally, there is a small amount of free ascitic fluid in the abdominal cavity, approximately 50 ml, which serves to maintain lubrication between organs. When excessive free fluid accumulates in the abdominal cavity, it is called ascites. Cirrhotic ascites is a chronic liver disease. It results from massive, nodular, or diffuse hepatocellular degeneration, necrosis, and regeneration; regeneration and necrosis promote fibrous tissue proliferation and scar contraction, causing the liver to harden and form cirrhosis. Cirrhosis leads to portal hypertension due to decreased liver function, causing splenomegaly, and protein-rich fluid leaking out due to poor absorption of proteins and vitamins forms ascites.
