acute corrosive gastritis

Internal Medicine

Acute corrosive gastritis is caused by the ingestion of strong acids (such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid, and Lysol) or strong alkalis (such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide), either intentionally or accidentally, leading to degeneration, erosion, ulceration, or necrotic changes in the gastric mucosa. Early clinical manifestations include severe pain behind the sternum and in the upper abdomen; severe cases may result in bleeding or perforation, while late stages can lead to esophageal stricture.
