Schistosoma haematobium was first discovered by Bilharz in Cairo, Egypt in 1851. In his honor, schistosomiasis is also called bilharziasis. The disease is endemic in most African countries. According to findings from ancient Egyptian mummies, this disease has existed in Africa for several thousand years. Schistosoma haematobium parasitizes the bladder and pelvic venous plexus, causing urogenital lesions, with clinical manifestations including terminal hematuria, bladder irritation, and obstructive symptoms.
