Pancreatic diseases can be roughly divided into seven categories: 1. Inflammation or infection, such as acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, and pancreatic abscess, among which acute pancreatitis is the most common, followed by chronic pancreatitis. 2. Hereditary diseases, such as cystic fibrosis of the pancreas, familial hereditary pancreatitis, and multiple endocrine neoplasia type I (Wermer syndrome), all of which are very rare. 3. Endocrine insufficiency, such as diabetes mellitus. 4. Benign tumors, such as pancreatic cystadenoma and pancreatic acinar adenoma, which are uncommon. 5. Malignant tumors, such as pancreatic cancer, which is relatively common. 6. Endocrine adenomas, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (gastrinoma), insulinoma, glucagonoma, Verner-Morrison syndrome (VIPoma), pancreatic polypeptide tumor, and somatostatinoma, which are very rare. 7. Congenital malformations, such as annular pancreas, pancreas divisum, and aberrant pancreatic tissue, which are relatively rare.
