Esophageal stricture generally refers to narrowing of the esophageal lumen caused by benign esophageal diseases (excluding tumors) or their complications. Benign esophageal strictures have congenital and acquired causes; the former is extremely rare, usually presenting as localized thickening and narrowing of a segment of the esophagus or as a ring-like or flap-like diaphragm in the esophageal mucosa. Among the latter, cicatricial stricture is the most common.
