Chloral hydrate is a commonly used sedative and antispasmodic drug, administered orally or by enema. Acute poisoning can occur with a single excessive dose or with too frequent repeated administration over a short period. Poisoning in the mother can lead to poisoning of the fetus or nursing infant. After absorption of a toxic dose, it can inhibit the central nervous system, vasomotor center, and cardiac function, and damage the liver and kidneys.
