gastric volvulus

Internal Medicine / Surgery

Gastric volvulus refers to any condition in which part or all of the stomach undergoes a change in the position of the greater and lesser curvatures, that is, the greater curvature is above and the lesser curvature is below. Gastric volvulus is uncommon; its acute type develops rapidly, is difficult to diagnose, and treatment is often delayed. The symptoms of the chronic type are atypical and not easily detected in a timely manner, so it is necessary to have some understanding of gastric volvulus. Neonatal gastric volvulus is a congenital malformation that may be related to malrotation of the small intestine. In adults, gastric volvulus is mostly associated with anatomical factors. The clinical symptoms of gastric volvulus depend on whether it is acute or chronic and on the extent and degree of torsion. Acute gastric volvulus presents with sudden, severe but brief chest or upper abdominal pain and persistent retching. Chronic gastric volvulus presents with symptoms of gastric discomfort, dyspepsia, burning sensation, upper abdominal fullness, or borborygmus. Acute gastric volvulus must be treated surgically. Gastric bleeding may cause complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding or even shock. Prevention should focus on developing good eating habits, avoiding greasy foods, and paying attention to keeping warm.
