Adhesive intestinal obstruction is acute intestinal obstruction caused by extensive intestinal adhesions and adhesive bands formed after abdominal surgery, inflammation, or trauma. It is the most common type of intestinal obstruction. Most patients have a history of abdominal surgery, inflammation, trauma, or tuberculosis, with precipitating factors such as overeating or strenuous exercise before onset; they often have a previous history of abdominal pain or medical visits due to intestinal adhesions. A small number of cases are due to congenital intra-abdominal bands, more commonly seen in children.
