Esophageal diverticulum refers to an epithelial-lined blind pouch connected to the esophageal lumen. There are 3 predilection sites: ① Pharyngoesophageal diverticulum, occurring at the junction of the pharynx and esophagus, is a pulsion diverticulum. ② Parabronchial diverticulum, occurring in the middle esophagus, also known as mid-esophageal diverticulum, is a traction diverticulum. ③ Epiphrenic diverticulum, occurring in the lower esophagus above the diaphragm, is also a pulsion diverticulum. Pharyngoesophageal diverticula are the most common, followed by epiphrenic diverticula, while parabronchial diverticula are the rarest. Whether esophageal diverticulum produces symptoms is related to the size of the diverticulum, the location of the opening, and whether food and secretions are retained. Most symptoms are mild and atypical.
