foreign body in stomach

Internal Medicine / Surgery

Foreign bodies in the stomach are divided into exogenous, endogenous, and those formed within the stomach, namely bezoars. Clinically common are persimmon bezoars, hair bezoars, and various swallowed foreign bodies. Exogenous foreign bodies are objects swallowed into the stomach, which are diverse, with common examples including buttons, dentures, coins, and animal bone spurs. Endogenous foreign bodies are those that pass through the pylorus, such as ascariasis masses, or gallstones that migrate into the stomach due to gallbladder perforation into the duodenum. Gastric bezoars can be classified by composition into phytobezoars, trichobezoars, pharmacobezoars, and mixed bezoars. Clinically, phytobezoars caused by eating persimmons, black dates, hawthorns, etc., are more common.
