Constipation

Internal Medicine / Traditional Chinese Medicine

Constipation refers to a reduced frequency of defecation, with fewer than 2-3 bowel movements per week, or only one bowel movement every 2-3 days, with small amounts of dry and hard stool. From a modern medical perspective, so-called constipation is not a specific disease but a symptom manifestation of multiple diseases. Constipation can range from mild to severe in degree, and can be temporary or long-lasting in duration. If it exceeds 6 months, it is considered chronic constipation. Because the causes of constipation are numerous and complex, once constipation occurs, especially if it is severe or prolonged, the patient should promptly go to the hospital for examination to identify the cause of constipation, so as not to delay the diagnosis and treatment of the primary disease, and to promptly, correctly, and effectively relieve the discomfort of constipation. Laxatives should never be abused.
