Esophageal and gastric varices are portal-systemic collateral circulation formed due to increased portal pressure and blood flow resistance caused by various reasons. The most common cause is portal hypertension resulting from liver cirrhosis. In addition, idiopathic portal hypertension, non-cirrhotic portal vein thrombosis, and Budd-Chiari syndrome are also common causes of portal hypertension-related esophageal and gastric varices.
