Esophageal leiomyoma is a benign tumor originating from the smooth muscle of the esophagus, most commonly located in the middle esophagus, followed by the lower segment, and rarely in the cervical segment. Clinically, most lesions occur intramurally, while others may be intraluminal, subserosal, or, in a few cases, diffuse, causing extensive tumor-like hyperplasia of the esophageal muscular layer. Benign esophageal tumors are rare, accounting for approximately 0.5–0.8% of all esophageal tumors. Because symptoms are mild or absent, patients often do not seek medical attention, or the condition is overlooked by clinicians. In recent years, due to advances in X-ray and other examination techniques, an increasing number of cases have been detected, of which 90% are esophageal leiomyomas.
