acute appendicitis associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
Internal Medicine / Surgery
In 1996, the United States reported 1 million HIV-infected individuals and 270,000 AIDS patients. According to a 1997 United Nations report, 30 million people worldwide carry the AIDS virus, and its incidence is still rising. Therefore, surgeons have increasing opportunities to manage general surgical diseases and AIDS-related lesions in such patients. Although the number of AIDS patients with acute appendicitis is not large, the misdiagnosis rate is high and complications are numerous, urgently requiring the attention of gastrointestinal surgeons.
