Superior mesenteric arterial thrombosis mostly occurs in the elderly. Its formation develops gradually on the basis of severe atherosclerotic occlusion, so the onset is insidious. Due to the establishment of collateral circulation caused by long-term chronic mesenteric ischemia, the acute ischemic symptoms are relatively mild clinically. However, as the condition worsens, oliguria and metabolic acidosis may gradually appear. When symptoms and signs of peritonitis appear, intestinal necrosis and perforation have usually already occurred.
