strongyloidiasis

Internal Medicine

Strongyloidiasis is caused by a facultative parasite with alternating generations; its free-living generation occurs in soil on the ground, while its parasitic generation occurs in the human body. Its life cycle is complex and the disease course is prolonged. Clinical symptoms are complex and varied; mild cases may be asymptomatic, while severe cases may develop ulcerative inflammation of the small intestine and colon, and may even cause death. The infection rate of this parasite in China is approximately 10%.
