Acute cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder caused by obstruction of the cystic duct and bacterial invasion; its typical clinical features are paroxysmal colicky pain in the right upper abdomen, accompanied by marked tenderness and abdominal muscle rigidity. Approximately 95% of patients have concomitant gallstones, termed calculous cholecystitis; 5% of patients do not have gallstones, termed acalculous cholecystitis.
