Osteoarthritis (OA), formerly known as hypertrophic arthritis, degenerative arthritis, or osteoarthrosis, is a synovial joint disease common in the elderly, characterized by cartilage degeneration and/or osteophyte formation at the joint margins. Clinical manifestations include joint pain, stiffness, and functional impairment, and it is generally considered a non-inflammatory joint disease. In reality, synovitis may also occur in joints affected for a long duration.
