senile chronic gastritis

Internal Medicine

Chronic gastritis in the elderly refers to chronic inflammation or atrophic changes of the gastric mucosa caused by various etiologies repeatedly acting on susceptible elderly individuals. The pathological changes of chronic gastritis are basically confined to the mucosal layer; therefore, strictly speaking, it should be called "chronic gastric mucositis" or "gastric mucosal disease." This condition is relatively common, accounting for approximately 80% to 90% of patients undergoing gastroscopy in outpatient clinics, with a higher prevalence in males than females. The most common symptoms of chronic gastritis are upper abdominal pain and fullness. In contrast to peptic ulcer disease, patients feel relatively comfortable when fasting but experience discomfort after meals, possibly due to impaired receptive relaxation function; although food intake is not large, they feel excessively full. Symptoms are often triggered or aggravated by cold food, hard food, spicy food, or other irritating substances.
