Senile constipation

Internal Medicine / Traditional Chinese Medicine / 医学影像科

Senile constipation refers to decreased frequency of defecation, accompanied by difficulty in defecation and hard, dry stool. Normal people defecate 1–2 times per day or once every 2–3 days. Constipation patients defecate fewer than 2 times per week, with straining during defecation, hard and dry stool, and small stool volume. Constipation is a common symptom in the elderly, with about one-third of elderly people experiencing constipation, which seriously affects their quality of life. In addition, there are abdominal distension, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain before defecation caused by inappropriate use of laxatives. Physical examination reveals a fecal-containing intestinal loop in the left lower abdomen, and fecal masses on digital rectal examination.
