Retropharyngeal space infection

Internal Medicine / Surgery

Retropharyngeal space infection (infection of retropharyngeal space) is a suppurative infection occurring between the posterior pharyngeal and esophageal wall and the prevertebral fascia. It is more common in infants and young children who are thin and malnourished, and is mostly caused by spread from nasal or ear infections or cervical spinal tuberculosis. In the early clinical stage, it resembles a respiratory tract infection, gradually forming a retropharyngeal abscess. Due to compression by the abscess, pharyngeal and laryngeal edema, respiratory and swallowing difficulties occur. When vocalizing, because the pharyngeal resonance cavity is reduced, the child has a duck-like voice or cry. Physical examination reveals neck stiffness. Clinically, early incision and drainage of pus and systemic anti-infective treatment are recommended.
