The popliteus muscle originates from the lateral surface of the lateral femoral condyle and inserts into the triangular area on the posterior aspect of the tibia. Together with the anterior cruciate ligament, it prevents anterior displacement of the femur. Downhill running and excessive internal rotation can increase anterior tibial displacement and increase stress on the popliteus tendon. Inflammation caused by various reasons is called popliteus tendinitis.
