Secondary systemic amyloidosis refers to systemic amyloidosis secondary to certain conditions such as chronic inflammation, chronic local or systemic bacterial infection, and malignant tumors. Secondary amyloidosis shows involvement of the spleen, liver, kidneys, adrenal glands, and lymph nodes. Although clinical signs of cardiac involvement are rare, the cardiovascular system is often extensively involved. The kidneys are often enlarged, and the liver and spleen are often enlarged and firm with a rubbery texture. Due to the replacement of normal splenic corpuscles by white amyloid deposits, the spleen is enlarged and appears translucent and waxy, known as the "sago" spleen.
