Renal ectopia refers to abnormal positioning of the kidney. The kidney originates in the pelvis; if it fails to ascend, it remains in the pelvis, or it may ascend excessively into the thoracic cavity. In incompletely ascended kidneys, the incidence of ureteropelvic junction stenosis, vesicoureteral reflux, and multicystic renal dysplasia is increased, and these conditions require surgical correction.
