Acute pyelonephritis is one of the most common and serious medical complications during pregnancy. It is generally bilateral; when unilateral, it predominantly affects the right side. During pregnancy, relative obstruction of the urinary tract causes delayed urine emptying and bacteriuria. Glucosuria and aminoaciduria favor bacterial proliferation. The adhesiveness of these bacteria plays a major role in the development of acute pyelonephritis during pregnancy.
