Kidney stones are a common and frequently occurring disease of the urinary system. The incidence is higher in males than in females and mostly occurs in young and middle-aged adults. There is no significant difference in incidence between the left and right sides. About 40% to 75% of patients with kidney stones have varying degrees of low back pain. Larger stones with little mobility manifest as lumbar soreness and discomfort, or dull pain or aching pain upon increased physical activity; colic caused by smaller stones often occurs suddenly as knife-like severe pain in the waist and abdomen, which is paroxysmal.
