Hemolytic anemia in the elderly refers to anemia that occurs when red blood cells are destroyed prematurely, at a rate exceeding the compensatory capacity of the bone marrow. Hemolysis occurs because of abnormalities in the red blood cells themselves, making them prone to destruction; or the red blood cells themselves are normal, but due to the action of hemolytic factors, a large number of red blood cells are destroyed, exceeding the compensatory function of bone marrow hematopoiesis, resulting in hemolytic anemia.
